Took the plunge and dove in head first!

Yep. I decided to post on CL under women seeking men for dating. I now have the free time to do so and already gotten a TON of replies. I couldn't believe how quickly it happened. Some of the guys are really cute and some are very nice but who knows how they are in person? I seem to have a dinner date lined up for Sunday night and a possible lunch date. Yes, I can date more than 1 person at a time, after all its called DATING. I was up front with my posting and put down I am deaf so there wouldn't be any akwardness and already one guy whos a film maker and knows 400 signs has contacted me. Now granted he's not my type but it was only one picture, maybe in person he will look better? I will meet any and all of these guys in a public location, and I havent given out any information such as where I live etc etc, just my first name. (For any family members reading, believe me I will be safe and cautious!)

I am nervous cuz I havent been on a date in quite some time. But I am ready to get back out there. The guy I will have dinner with on sunday is a little older than me, 35 and has a 14 year old son who lives in Vermont. I don't think I have ever dated anyone with kids, yet alone a teenager. He seems very decent, will deafinitely blog about how it goes?

I think I will take down the post soon because I have several possible dates now and thats all I wanted, but boy did it boost my self-esteem when they wrote how cute and "innocent" I look, ha ha, me innocent! Looks can be decieving!

The "Dollar Man"

Some of you may or may not remember a show back in the 70s that starred Lee Majors called "The 6 million dollar man" But because I was DEAF *gasps* I couldn't hear or understand the "6 million" part of the title so everytime the show came on, I would run around the house telling my family members, "The dollar man is on, the dollar man is ON!" and my mother would reply "Yeah, thats right, thats all he's worth!" ha ha. I also loved "Bionic Woman" which starred Lindsay Wagner as Jamie Sommers. She had this incredible hearing due to her bionic parts and I would go around the house, turning up my hearing aid and imitate her as if I could HEAR anything!
there a good link that tests your knowledge on "Classic TV" check it out Classic Televion Quiz, good luck!

I didn't go to ASD today, my plans got messed up last night when Norton told me at the last minute he would rather come wednesday night instead of last night. I knew I wouldnt be able to handle getting up at 6am, going sight seeing all day and then come back here and move things tonight, go to two appts tmw morning, work all day tmw and then visit Eddie tmw nite, nope I am not the Bionic woman! Its a disappoinment yes, but I am sure Blondie and Carvey will fill me in when they return from ASD.

Amazingly AssWipe is being somewhat nice to me, he's allowing me to leave my futon in my old room along with the TV, because and I quote "you were so helpful with finding homes for the kittens." Hey man, perfect! Besides I gave him my vaccuumm cleaner, as he has so many cats and a dog he needs it more than I do (besides he pretty much destroyed it using it for dog hair, that it hardly has any suction!) And now I am letting him borrow my fan. I guess its better to keep your friends close and your enemies closer?!

Friday I will go and see a stuido for $1000 (yikes) but its my co workers' husband who is the broker who is showing it to me. Get this, he only does Rego Park and Forrest Hills (the more expensive part of Queens) he doesnt do Astoria! I have another apt to look at on friday as well, its a 2 bedroom apt which would be shared with another girl. So far her emails seem promising and for $660 a month plus ult I think thats pretty reasonable, I like the location too. Been emailing people for various rooms or apts in both Queens and Brooklyn. Have 4 more weeks to go and hopefully I will find something decent, so the hunt resumes.

Been watching a lot of the discovery channel (science) on space and astronomy. Check this out, it seems cosmic rays (rays from the explosions of stars) fill the universe and imagine bits and pieces of radio active, radiation and other materials hurling in space in all directions. Now here's the neat part, I used to think lighting during thunderstorms was caused by our clouds and temperature climate. But newer theories point to the idea that cosmic rays which bombard our atmosphere everyday, all the time, eventually come thru and mixs that with the weather and Viola, lighting! Plus this helps regulate our "safe zone" region in space where we have numerous satellites and stations above the earth, without thunderstorms and lighting, we would not have this safe zone, thereby cells, digital television etc etc would all come to a screeching halt. So lighting, even tho deadly is crucial to our everyday life. Cool huh?

Summer lovin'

My god, summer heat has HIT and I am melting, melting just like the wicked witch of the west! The heat has been so bad that I've had a headache for the past 36 hours! It happens every year during the first few days of summer heat. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE summer cuz of swimming and my birthday but the first few days is always Hell!

The packing is DONE! The "moving" will be completed tonight when Blondie and Norton come by and help me take my stuff over to Blondie's where I will live for the month of June.

Tom has relocated to Knobs' last night, he seems to be doing fine. As fine as my bastard kitty can do!

The visit to PA was wonderful this past weekend. Went to the thrift store with my Mom and brought 4 jeans, 6 shirts all for $43 smackaroos. Yep, thats all folks, $43! Thats how much it would cost me to buy 1 pair of jeans here in NYC. Thrift stores are hidden gems and I love saving $$$! I aslo borrowed my nephew's copy of the "Fantastic Four." I really liked it as far as superhero movies go. I don't know why it didnt get good reviews, in my opinion it was more captivating then X-Men (I) or the Hulk!

Erfo has returned, yay! She was overwhelmed with my stuff in her room but we are making it work :)

Been working on the website for my films, I hope to have it up and running in a few weeks?

Tmw I will go to ASD (American School for the Deaf) in Connecticut with 7 other people to visit the school. I have never been there so I am really excited, not to worry, Ill snap lots of pixs! I am very interested in the dorm life and what kind of programs the school has? Also what type of communications is used? Bi Bi? ASL? Oral? The only sucky part is we have to meet at 6am, what an ungodly hour!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Been packing, working and editing the past few days. Blondie came by Wed nite to help me with some of the furniture. We did a good job and I'm about 85% done, the last of it consist of dishes, glasses that need to be washed b4 packed, some clothes, my futon which will be taken care of Tuesday night. Monday night, Tom, my bastard kitty will go live with Knob and also it will be my last night sleeping in the same apt as AssWipe! Yay!

Last night after work, got to hang with King, Knob, Norton, Theresa, and Blondie at Radio Perfecto. They have an excellent penne with vodka sauce and shrimp, yummy. It was nice to take a small break and just socialize.
I'm now on my way to PA for the weekend. I'm thinking about getting highlights added to my hair, or in my case darklights. I'm yenning for a small make over. Man Penn Station (34th st) was PACKED. It was like a sea of faces. I brought these cool organge tights and lacey tights at this one store called Elegance at Penn Station. I'm pretty sure Knob told me about it and ladies if you have a chance, check it out, cool threads.

The editing project is done for now, till I get the additional footage from June 3rd and June 10th. So far, so good. I really focus a LOT better at work when it comes to editing. If I end up living in a studio, I'm gonna build some kind of division to create a brightly lit area for work, film, editing purposes. I want a nice desk, the crap one I brought wasn't very good and its already falling apart, I'm not taking it with me when I move. Knowing AssWipe, he'll hold on to it because the man is a human garbage disposal and king of the rubbage hill!

The kittens are becoming wild now, a lot of biting and they don't realize their claws on my bare legs SCRATCH! Owieeeee. But I love them all anyways. Will miss them. And ofc Snowney the dog :]

I also wanted to add, Ridors blog today had submissions by VP op(s), interesting to read but most of it was common sense. I LOVE VP! And Isight relay, its one of the best technological advancement if you ask me!

Also if you haven't brought your MICA tickets, what are you waiting for?!? Go to www.micarunway2006.com. Hope to see a lot of deafies there!

"Success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get."

The above quote was sent to me by my grandmother, Baba (thank you). The author is unknown but an excellent quote.

Below is a letter written by FSSA, I bolded the areas that I felt were most relevant and supports my view points. Kudos FSSA!

FSSA Press Release - May 22, 2006

PRESS RELEASE

May 22, 2006

The FSSA Coalition has read carefully the May 19th memo from the acting chair of the Board of Trustees to the Gallaudet University Community. We welcome the Board of Trustees’ commitment to openness as well as improved and direct communication with the campus community. We appreciate the evidence of careful listening to the concerns of an overwhelming majority of the faculty, students, staff and alumni at Gallaudet University, and agree that there is a need for increased accountability and shared governance.

While we agree leadership is the key for ensuring Gallaudet’s successful accomplishment of the challenges ahead, we are disappointed that this memo does not address the failed leadership of Dr. Jane K. Fernandes or her selection as Gallaudet’s 9th President. And, while we appreciate that the Board of Trustees recognizes the importance of a diversity plan to enhance our multi-cultural community, we are dismayed that they have entrusted the responsibility for facilitating this plan to Dr. Fernandes. Although Dr. Fernandes claims diversity as her strength in leadership, she has demonstrated that she lacks awareness of how her approach thus far has been controlling, non-inclusive, and lacking in transparency and equity. She has not only failed to unite the Gallaudet community, she has divided and severely hurt our community with her identity politics and inequitable diversity strategies.

The protest will continue until the presidential search process is re-opened, and a transparent and fair process is conducted to find a leader who can unite our diverse community. While we appreciate the Board of Trustees’ promise of no reprisals for the protest up to the 2006 graduation, we seek an extension of the pledge for as long as this protest is necessary.

By making a single individual or decision more important than the needs of the university and its community, the Board of Trustees has ensured that Gallaudet’s future is endangered. No university can succeed when its selected leader has lost the trust and confidence of the community. Clearly, a majority of the faculty, students, staff, alumni and related organizations has stated that our extensive collective experience with Dr. Fernandes is stronger than any promises she can make. Sixty-six percent of the faculty voted no confidence in the appointment of Dr. Fernandes as Gallaudet’s 9th President, as did 81% of the students. More than 3,000 alumni have signed petitions seeking a new search and new leadership. There is a choice: A choice between Gallaudet University and all of the people it serves all over the world, or a single individual who has failed to lead and unify our community. When will the Board of Trustees put the needs of the university and its community before any one individual and at what cost?

The FSSA Coalition and many others look forward to working with the Board of Trustees to seek a just resolution to this crisis. The reality is that the person selected through a flawed process cannot lead when an overwhelming majority of students, faculty, staff and alumni at Gallaudet University will not follow.

I thought this letter was very well done and to the point!

Also check out this website,

TVDeaf.com which is sponsored by I believe VRS or at least affliated, its hard to gather from the site but still cool to look at.

I couldn't get over Ridor's Blog today about helping that poor guy "James." Ricky, what you did was really sweet but do keep in mind that he could have additional problems besides education (lack of) and his ASL skills, so it might be better to contact social services on his behalf and serve as his advocate (deafinitely!). I am proud of you Ricky, you've done GOOD!

Yesterday I finished reviewing the footage and elimating uneccesary items such as lapse times or really poor shots. I am trying a few different format and the hours flew by. Thats one cool thing about editing movies, is you lose track of time. I have to remind myself to take periodically breaks and stretch. I am gearing to get back to work on that shortly.

Last night, hung out with Blondie and Cain. Blondie went to bed and Cain and I yakked for a few hours about trival things such as the meaning of life, is there an afterlife? He had never heard of the "invisble silver cord" that connects your body and soul. Many NDE (Near-Death Experiences) people remark how when they are above their bodies, watching things happen around them, they often feel a tug, an invisble link and often it keeps them from completely seperating, ie NDE, instead of death itself. I am not sure what I believe? Life after death? Reincarnation? And if recarniation exist, does it mean we are reborn as humans on the planet earth or like Hinduism where they believe you come back as a plant or animal, etc etc.. I really like the works done by Raymond Moody. If you ever get to read some of his books, I highly recommend you do so :)

anyhoo, back to editing.

My "skinny" size 8 jeans

Boy, I need to do laundry so bad that today the only pair of jeans left were my skinny size 8 pair and amazingly enough they fit without me oozing out or looking like someone painted them on me. No camel toe for moi!

Saw my co worker whos husband is a broker. They will be out of town for the next 5 days so I will see him next Wednesday so its definite that I will crash with friends for the next few weeks and then get a place (hopefully by myself) in Astoria or Forrest Hills, Queens. That means I am outta NYC for the weekend to visit the folks and its about damn time. The month of June I am booked,
Saturday the 3rd have a film gig for MICA rehersal;
the 10th I have my ASL content speciality test;
the 17th is MICA!;
then the 19th I leave for MD, AADB camp where I will ssp for a week and return the following weekend the 25th, 26th.

Been working on a video project today, I am not sure about the format of the video or the length desired? Do I keep people in the footage even if they aren't part of the final results or only use people who are part of the final results? Hopefully I will meet with the coordinator later today or tmw to get the specifics. I may bug Joe Joy to help me with the commentary because he's naturally hilarous!

Its nice being done with school, and I am enjoying the freedom from papers and exams. I only have one incomplete to finish this summer for ceramics class otherwise I am DONE!

Saw Eddie last night, he's doing well considering he just had knee surgery last Thurs.. He's a lot of fun to be with and I've never known a man who likes to talk as much as he does, no wonder he has endless number of friends. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't never been able to get SDI the movie done because he used a lot of his contacts for locations and equipment.

Alrighty back to editing!

Welcome Averi!

First thing first, Ronnie gave birth to a healthy baby boy! Welcome Averi, we've been looking forward to your arrival! Mommy and Daddy especially!

Now on to FSSA business;
Today some of the BOT members will make an effort to mingle with FSSA supporters at Gally, but will anything useful come out of it? we will see...

Below an article from the Washington Post on Gally's FSSA Movement

GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY
No Punishments to Follow Protests Against President

By Susan Kinzie
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, May 20, 2006; Page B04

Protesters at Gallaudet University won't be punished for staging rallies, faculty no-confidence votes and a tent city after the announcement of a new president at the school for the deaf, the board of trustees told the community yesterday.

A coalition of students, faculty, staff and alumni said the search process was badly flawed and demanded that it be reopened without reprisals for those who spoke out.
For more than a week, students at Gallaudet University have been protesting the selection of president-elect Jane K. Fernandes, questioning whether she is right to represent the deaf community.

Protesting a President-Elect
For more than a week, students at Gallaudet University have been protesting the selection of president-elect Jane K. Fernandes, questioning whether she is right to represent the deaf community.

As the year ended last week with hours of talks between protesters and board members, trustees announced that Jane K. Fernandes would resign as provost to focus on her new role as president. She is to begin Jan. 1, when longtime president I. King Jordan retires.

In a memo to the campus community, Brenda Brueggemann, acting chair of the board, promised that there would be no reprisals. And she said Fernandes will work with the community on its concerns about diversity, heading a panel that will include students, staff, trustees and professors.

Brueggemann said trustees will have more informal talks with people on campus to address concerns about transparency and lack of faith in the way the university is run. And Fernandes, who will lead the search for the provost to replace her, will do that with full faculty involvement, Brueggemann wrote.

After Fernandes was named provost in 2000, professors were angry that they didn't have a voice in the process, and voted to condemn it.

Jordan said he would appoint an interim provost, and has already met with campus leaders to choose a committee that will help nominate and interview candidates.

Richard Lytle, a professor who has been working with the protesters, said the group "will continue to help the board understand the cost to our community -- the cost of keeping Jane" Fernandes, including the potential impact on alumni donations and community support.

the cost of JKF is too expensive, BOT wake up and smell the coffee

In other news, the past 5 days of apartment hunting has been grueling, either they pick someone else or my income isn't enough to rent the place. Grr I am feeling very discouraged and whats worse, ASSwipe who was super friendly over the weekend, send me a ridicolus email today, so passive-agreesive. I ignored him over the weekend, I wasn't buying his "Chesire Cat Grin!" So I am surrendering and am looking in Queens now, I understand that Astoria and Long Island City are both nice areas that have very urban feel to it. And I realize before I was wrong not to consider it as its actually closer to LI then Brooklyn is! So today I saw my co worker and tmw I will meet up with her husband the broker to go over what I am looking for etc etc.. Which means I will probably live with Blondie the month of June, Tom with Knob. Looks like I will have to pay for movers 2xs (once for Blondies place) and once for whereever I move to in July. I am still saving money because the broker service is free and I don't have to pay rent so I am not upset with that.

Am working on a video project today, its slow at work so why not?

NYC not "Crips" friendly

Wow its only been a week since I left "Tent City" and yet it feels like months ago. I saw the most recent announcement that the BOT (IrvingBot??-see Ridor's blog), anyhoo they are only gonna take 1 day to review the issues, gee whiz, thanks. A whole day, wow how gracious of them. I can't believe they part with a WHOLE day, and just maybe, maybe it will be this summer but if not, gosh, there's always next October when they will meet anyways. Hmm.. boy they seem deeply concerned by the issues that have arisen in the past several weeks but by george, they can solve it in 1 day. Gosh I wish I were like them, confident and brillant. *retches* BOT you made a BAD decision in appointing JKF as Prez, sure she's a fundraiser dream come true but shes not a LEADER! Do we have to mime this for you since English and ASL have failed this, or better yet we perform interpretive dancing?

[I found a copy of the BOT announcement, read below;]

a memo from the BOT's chair Brueggemann;

May 19, 2006

MEMORANDUM

TO: Gallaudet Community

FR: Brenda Brueggemann, Acting Chair, Board of Trustees

RE: Beginning to Address the Concerns We Heard

As we move forward from the events of these past weeks and continue to focus on the future, we wanted to bring you up to date on several important steps the Board, the president and the president select are taking. We appreciated the time you gave to meet with us last week as well as the honest feedback and insights you shared with us. We heard many important things that will be addressed immediately and in the future and we want you to know we take very seriously the issues you brought to us. We have heard your concerns and we are already acting on them. This Board of Trustees, like most college Boards, primarily plays an oversight and policy-making role for the campus. In this role we do not want to interfere, but rather empower, the president, the president-select and the campus community itself to take primary actions on its own expressed concerns and issues.

First, the Board is making plans to hold a one-day retreat devoted to follow-up on these dialogues that would take place either this summer (preferable) or in conjunction with our October regular Board of Trustees meeting. Here is a summary of our discussions and actions so far: -(this is what I find to be so insulting!)

* No reprisals:

Neither the Board nor the president nor the president-select will tolerate any reprisals for anyone who has voiced their opinions in protest or support, on campus or in the community, in writing (electronic or paper) or through direct conversations during the presidential search process and the weeks between the announcement of Dr. Fernandes’ appointment and Commencement.

* Diversity:

President-select Jane Fernandes will head up a blue ribbon committee to find strategies to address the diversity issues facing our campus; the committee will be comprised of Board members, faculty, staff, and students. The Diversity Action Plan, which was tabled by the Board of Trustees at the May 2006 meeting, will be discussed first and amended, with an expected approval date of next October at the Board meeting. An outside facilitator and/or experts who work on diversity and organizational change will be used for continuing this important work. Dr. Fernandes will report more on this soon. Wow, thats JKF for you, first she resigns from Provost so she can head a committee on Diversity and don't forget she will head the search for a new Provost, hmm this goes from bad to worse!

* Climate and Communication:

Issues about the flow of, and access to, information across groups and from top down and bottom up were raised. The need for more substantive dialogue, more trust and inclusiveness, and less fear and intimidation was discussed. Finally, transparency and clarity in process, procedures, and criteria were called for. We have begun a discussion about these issues and recognize that the Board needs to interact more directly with campus constituents and will set up less filtered, more informal times for interaction when the Board meets on campus. The Board also decided that it is important to leave the Board Room and participate in an event on campus at least once during each of its official meetings on campus. Gee, why didn't you do this before selecting a new prez such as JKF, perhaps this could have been avoided? These activities would be a start toward more direct communication between the campus community and the Board.

* Accountability and Governance:

In our meetings with constituents, we recognized that there is a desire for more shared power and responsibility in the overall campus governance; more meaningful partnerships between the groups that comprise the campus community (administration, staff, students, faculty); and better accountability mechanisms so that there are actions and outcomes that follow ideas and promises.

The Board has begun a discussion about some possible ways to address these concerns, First, we are asking Dr. Fernandes to lead the search for a new Provost with full faculty involvement. Second, we are ensuring that the process to select an interim provost includes faculty, staff, and students. Currently, Dr. Jordan is working with the Chair of the Faculty, Chair of the Staff Advisory Committee, the SBG president, and the GSA president to identify individuals to serve on a committee to help select an interim provost. Third, we are researching models of trusteeship used at other universities for the purpose of identifying ways to directly involve campus constituencies in Board business.

* Leadership

Our shared conversations expressed the need for continued leadership that would support our strategic goals and plans to: strive for academic excellence; enhance education for future leaders in industry, education, and politics; serve as a viable role model for the deaf community nationally and globally; embrace change; and establish and invigorate a positive climate of trust, inclusiveness, respect and partnerships on campus.

We think that the ideas and actions above address leadership. We also believe that the issue of leadership is one that all constituents on campus must take up together, and that this Board, like most other university Boards, must principally play an oversight and policy-making role. Really, then why did JKF only resign as Provost, why didn't she resign as Prez-select since we the constituents didn't want her in the first place?

We want to emphasize that these are first steps toward addressing the concerns we heard when we were on campus last week. The Board, the president and the president-select will continue to discuss and plan actions that respond to what you told us. We all care deeply about Gallaudet and we will move forward together, as a community, because we can do great things when we work together. Only way any of us FSSA can believe this is for you all to allow FSSA reps to be a part of these meetings and have a voice, otherwise, it will not get better.

Ok got my daily BOT ranting out of the way...

[Update @ 1am, go to JoeyBaer website and click on the new video "Thank you video from David Eberwein." I got to meet him during my visit to Tent City, a real stand up guy! Thumbs up Eberwein and thanks for the video :) ]

Now onto life outside of Gally's mess;

Saw an article yesterday in the NY papers about how the taxi cab drivers are upset by the request for more "accessible" cabs for those who use wheelchairs otherwise known as "Crips." and no this is not a derogatory term, it was coined by them none different then use calling ourselves Deafies, if you read Ragged Edge Magazine Online you can find vaulable info on other groups besides Deafies, but anyways here's a press relase from the New York Radio on the topic;

Council Proposes Half of Cabs be Wheelchair Accessible
WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY May 16, 2006 —The taxi industry is up in arms about proposed legislation that would require half of the 308 taxi medallions sold next month be sat aside for wheelchair accessible cabs.

REPORTER: The Taxi and Limousine Commissioner, Matthew Daus testified before the Council that his agency needs more time to find a more reliable model to put on the road and the council isn't giving them enough time before the auction.

But Jean Ryan of Disabled in Action says the excuses have gone on too long.

RYAN: There is always going to be some reason why we should not go forward with accesibilty if we waited for him to be ready, for the TLC to be ready we would never get there.

REPORTER: Only 29 of New York's nearly 13,000 yellow cabs are accessible.

Dang 29 out of 13,000, jesus thats only .22%, now I think NYC can defintiely do better than 29 lousy cabs. So quit crying over 154 cabs! Imagine if that was you, in a wheelchair, and you know how unkind this city is to Crips, I mean my god the subways aren't even available to them and the buses stop every 2 blocks taking what would be a 10 minute commute and turning it into anywhere to 45 mins to 90 mins!

Went to Brooklyn again today, yep in the downpour! I saw one apt that has 4 roommates looking for a 5th, each person has their own bedrooms so its a total of 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Plus a small living area and kitchen. My room if I take it and its offered, is slightly bigger then the one I am in now BUT I like the location a LOT, 2 blocks from the subway, people seem cool, trendy neighborhood. Plus I can store some of my stuff in the hallway like the trunk and the room is already equip a closet/rack gadget so its workable. The guy will let me know Tuesday if I got the room or not as he has more people coming out to see it.

The 2nd apt I went to see, I arrived early so one of the maintence guy showed me the empty apartment, GORGEOUS! newly painted and renovated but the woman never showed up. When I called her thru my sidekick relay, the person kept hanging up and I was trying to explain who I was. I gave up, as nice sa the place looked and in a good location, they wont work with me as a deafie then I don't want to live there.

After that Blondie and I took Knob out for a belated birthday. We both missed her birthday celebration last week so we had excellent Thai and sparking wine from Italy that was delish! Just got home a little while ago, now all 5 kittens and 3 cats are in my room, running about, my room is only 10 by 6 so there's an occassional thunk here and there but the kittens don't mind, this Monday they will be 6 weeks old. They are sooo cute, wild but cute. Ill miss them when I leave.

Today Marked 6 Weeks...

Since I had the surgery. Weird how the weeks flew by in a sense.

I spent most of the day roaming the 2/3, F, A train in Brooklyn, looking at apts, and met one possible roommate. Nothing promising. Feeling a little discourage but I got to hold out and really explore my living options. I made the mistake of making rushed decisions on where I live the last 2xs. I don't want to do that this time.

I realize I CRaVe a more urban setting. A lot of what I visited today was suburban, row of houses, line of parked cars, Yuck! I lived in developments for so long snd now I want the CITY! So do do? I will keep my eyes open for Brooklyn Heights, otherwise known as the "The Artist District." and ofc DUMBO too.

The one woman I met today, herself from Italy. Nice woman. She is a professional painter. Yesterday, when I read this in her email, it wasn't clear if she meant artistically or in the sense of painting houses or rooms? Cuz I've done both. Turns out as an artist, a studio, the works. I love to have a spare room for movie editing purposes and to use as a studio. Nyhoo, she has a pretty heavy Italian accent. It never came up that I'm a Jew. Now after checking online her website (she gave me her business card), I see a lot of her work revolves around the Reinassance, Medievel and a LOT of Crosses. I'm not sure if its Catholism or ??? Being a Jew, I am not able to distinguish among the Gentiles Puritan Religions if you will *rim shot*....*groans*. Anyways that doesn't bother me, I have many hardcore Christian and Catholic friends so I only poke fun.

Good news, Ridor along with a few "Big Time" bloggers got interviewed by the Washington Post (See Ridor's website for details). But this was something I sorta raised my eyebrows at. "The 12 Days in May tees." Funny tho I did mention them before on my blog but I assumed there would be some collaboration between this guy and FSSA. If not, I encourage him to do so.

Excerpts from Ridor's blog;

DeafWeekly Editor Trying To Make $$: Tom Willard made it clear that due to the loss of revenues from two companies, he intends to make profit off from the Gallaudet Protest by selling “12 DAYS IN MAY: The World Hears Gallaudet University.” merchandises.

I personally think less of people who remain silent or did not endorse during two weeks of protests, then decided to make profits off from it without any kind of donations to the FSSA, is despicable. I think it is a slap to the FSSA and the protesters who invested their time and energies in trying to get the University to listen to the wishes of students, faculty members, staff and alumni.

But like it or not, Tom Willard is correct that it is his right to exercise his rights to make money out of this.

...

um, yeah he has the right but still, cold hard cash over principles...ay yi yi...

I wonder how the students at MSSD feel about JKF and the situation. It doesn't surprise me that MSD kids have a blog up. And what happened to the CSD video in Joey Baer site? It was well done. I hope they didn't get in trouble. I thought what they did took some guts. To say it as it is, and they did. I also wonder about other deaf schools in other states how they view whats happening. I can see a BIG difference between the attitudes of NYers here, and the Gally FSSA in DC. See here we are a blend of Former NTID/RITers, and Gallaudetains. Overall I don't sense any real competition based on that. The only major differences is when we reflect on how long we've knowns someone. For example I knew Knob from Gally, King knows Didi from RIT. Thats about as dramatic as it gets. The familarity of knowing someone from a school experience, etc., etc. Especially when its in a residential setting. (Dormitory, it makes the experience different.)

Tmw will be a better day, gonna do some packing and editing. I need to free up more space in my hard drive and memory so I can start editing this small mini project. I need to get my mind off of Maps, subway location, street names, rent $$, ya catch me drift (:-)

What's Driving the Gallaudet Protests

In an attempt to divert observers and the Gallaudet University community from serious, underlying issues about her selection as the university's next president, Jane K. Fernandes has endlessly spouted the official line that the protest is about identity politics, signing fluency and her being the wrong "kind" of deaf person ["The School Year Concludes, but the Controversy Does Not; Fernandes to Resign as Provost, Concentrate on Transition," Metro, May 13]

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/12/AR2006051202084.html

Nonsense. In 28 years as a faculty member at Gallaudet I have seen which faculty members have earned the students' respect. Many of them are, of course, deaf or hard of hearing. However, a great number of these respected faculty members are hearing, and many of them are not fluent signers, but it doesn't matter to the students. What students want most from their teachers is competence, a respectful rapport, and the ability to listen and respond sympathetically to their concerns. Without these qualities no teacher or administrator can ever earn the students' trust or respect.

BRUCE WHITE
University Park

Well yesterday at work, since its pretty dead here due to graduation and summer school doesn't start till tmw. I was able to make a lot of calls inquiring about apts in both Brooklyn and Manhattan areas. Some for apts to rent, others for rooms to rent, meaning roommies. I have to just accept that I may have to live with roommates for another year. Wow in my life at MSSD, Gally, MD and now NYC I must have had well over 100 roommates. The best by far were;

Knob
Sorry
Ridor
Sharpe
Alexa
Mona Lisa

Funny, all of the above are deafies except for Mona Lisa who was this cool hearie chick I lived with for 6 months b4 moving to NYC. She was from Panama. I always wondered why her folks named her Mona Lisa? I have had bad luck with hearie roommates, so I plan to have a lock on my bedroom door if I have roommates. Not up for discussion, its a MUST. I have over $3000 worth of equipment and software, not to mention mini dvs with my movies that are one of a kind that if anything happened to them, I be shit out of luck.

Hung with Blondie and Cain last night, Blondie made wicked Apple Martinis and I paid for it this morning when I woke up with a splitting headache at 8am! I of course, downs some excedrin and made myself go back to sleep, occassionally waking up to inhale water. Finally woke up feeling better. No more drinks for me this week.

Tmw I will see 5 apts or rooms for rent in Brooklyn. I have one room to look at tonight at 8pm off of 137th st and Broadway. I want to consider all my options before making any decisions.

Been toying with some new ideas to film or perform. Blondie is working on some new songs and we may team up with a few other deafies to create a line up for next fall. Plus I need to email the one guy who is finishing his residency in Psychiatristy (sp?) and has been working on a transgender documentary for 2 years now. He needs help with the editing and it will be used nationwide in numerous psychology conventions on whether or not trangenderism is really a "disorder" that belongs in the diagnoses DMX (I cant remember the accroynm) but it has 5 levels and within each level if the client meets some of the symptoms, the shrink can label them as whatever they see fit. I am glad to help him out with his project as many of you know, I am really into psychology and LGBT rights. Having so many friends who are gay or LGBT friendly, it would feel wrong not to help.

I've gotten a lot of feedback on my photos in my blog. Blondie wants me to continue taking photos. I am still waiting for my federal and state taxes to be refunded, but I will use some of the $$ to buy a decent digital camera.

alirghty gonna head to the computer lab where I can use their IMacs to make more Vp calls, latah bruthas and sistahs

Catching up with my life;

Well now that I am done with Tent City, I can resume my normal life, sorta. I mean it still hangs around in the back of my mind. Obviously I will be following FSSA progress.

[Update 5/16/06 12:18am;
I must THANK Joey Baer for adding me to his website. I have had over 175 visitors. Undy before I had maybe 30 to 40. And you do do? WATCH this clip from Mos Deux You Must Not Quit video. I want to add how impressed I am by the cinemagraphy of the shots and editing. Good job Mos Deux]

Saturday I woke up at 2pm from the bus ride back from DC. I immediately started my laundry. I was completely out of socks, undies and pants! I was suppose to meet a friend for dinner but I knew I wouldnt get there on time. So we agreed to meet at the theater where the "Necklace" was being played at. Guthrie, Dax, and Alexa are in it, and I am a big fan of theirs. But the A train, oh brother, express, local and then express again. I ended up missing the whole play because of the screw ups by the A train (grr). Karloff (Erfo, hope you dont mind me borrowing that nickname?) and Lewis were there. Luckily for me, Lewis was able to get my ticket put off till the 5pm Sunday showing and lucky for me, I was free Sunday nite. Anyhoo, we three headed over to Manhattan from Brooklyn for the 11pm Burlesque show. Since we had an hour to kill, we hit a nearby diner. Order drinks and desserts. Ty saw us in the window and ended up joining our table. I kinda scolded him for not going to Gally for the FSSA protest but he had conflicts witht he issues. I hope I was able to enlighten him on the reality of what was happening down in DC.

I gotta admit, I was tired but I knew I would disappoint friends if I didnt go and give my support. Here are some pixs of what I would call the only known Deaf Burleque show in the US. Undy this is a mix of deaf and hearies but nonetheless, its a BURLESQUE show! You can check about the show at Honi Harlow. They will be taking a summer break and returning in the fall. So deafies if youre planning to visit the Big Apple, this is a must see show!
The photos below were from Saturday night's show where the theme was "Alice in Funderland"

Honi Harlow (hearie), and one Mystique (deafie)

Loretta Love (deafie), Honi Harlow (hearie and signer) and Mystique (deafie)

Jabberwocky done by deafies in ASL by Loretta Love, Noir Nutella and Big Bronx;

The Blue Bunny (hearie)

Then Sunday I helped out with a MICA rehersal. I cannot say much more except it was fun, because I was filming :)

After that I headed back down to Brooklyn to catch the "Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. Alexandria Wailes, Guthrie Nutter, Darren Fudenske starred in, produced by NYTD and directed by Garret Zuercher at The Great Room theatre. I will tell you one of the things I enjoyed the most about this play was it was all in ASL! None of that bi bi, sim com crap. I am sorry but I am a little tired of seeing "terped" plays and its just nice to see a play in ASL and just relaxs. I applaud NYTD for their efforts considering their major budget cuts and they still pulled off a fantastic play! *Hand Waves*

Today I mostly emailed about apartments, worked some, saw Blondie, worked some more. Came home and uploaded the photos. I think I better hand back the camera before I become dangerous *grins*

Last of Tent City Photos-Pah!

I hafta start off with this pix of Ricky Taylor aka Ridor veeing the events at the Friday evening FSSA Rally;

Ok here are the photos of when we recieved the news about JKF resignation from Friday the 12th around 7pm. You see I was walking with my former principal Cindy Bailes who now works at Gally when we see a group of people rush over to the area where DOSS hut is. There were supporters and onlookers surrounding a car is parked in the street. We knew something major was up!

I have no idea who this guy is by the car...

Here's Carol Etring who because we couldn't see her moved to the steps;

Matt Lockhart wearing an "Unity For Gallauet" Tee;

Jonathan Lamberton who looks deeply concerned and sleep deprieved, stood patiently as we watch Carol Etring make her annoucement;

Here's Cindy Bailes waiting patiently for the annoucnement to begin;

Here's Carol E talking about the BOT's decision in regards to JKF;

Bob Arnold watches the news unfold;

Carol E continues with the news of JKF's resignation as Provost;

You can see how worried BOT is now that Ryan Commerson is back on campus, they had a total of one (somewhat curious) onlooker DOSS dude who reminds me of the actor from Oz and Law & Order TV shows...

Here's a real reaction to the BOT annoucnement, Erin Whitney;

These photos were taken at the end of the BOT announcement; where people quickly began discussing among themselves what just happened...

Here I started to walk around, snapping pictures;

Here's Erin Moran, who keeps cool and upbeat only moments after the announcememt;

Yep thats the famous orange electrical cord that kept Tent City alit;

Here we see LaToya talking with someone (he could be a BOT member or under IKJ adminstration, he seemed very indifferent to her concerns) and what were her concerns might I add? IKJ announcing lockdown for all buildings on Gally campus. Here LaToya negiotated for Fowler Hall to remain open for Tent City residents to use the bathroom and remove their belongings. Even in the midst of tension, Plummer graciously thanks the man for giving us the "ok" to keep Fowler Hall unlocked;

Here I ran into two former classmates from my MSSD class of '93
It's Franklin Torres, me and Aparna Lele. Poor Torres he was sooo tired from working from the git go of the FSSA movement, he nodded off as we took his pix;

The sun has gone down, most of us have finished eating hot dogs and hamburgers and griping about the BOT annoucement; (Except Moore in the blue, who missed all of the hoopla and hadn't eatened dinner)

Here's a bunch of deafies arriving to the Poor House off of PA ave, most were celebrating their graduation. But me, I wasn't in the mood for celebration, thats why I headed back to NYC on the 11 45pm bus;

Here's me 4 30am on the subway headed home after a LONG 3 days visiting Tent City. But as you can see, it was worth it to me!

And that my friends wraps up my 3 days of Tent City/FSSA visit. Now I must do what the rest of you do, check FSSA.org periodically for updates and news but if I find any additional info ofc I will blog it, take an easy Tent City, it was nice seeing you!

Thoughts and Links on FSSA movement;

I suggest everyone who's interested the FSSA movement to always check Elisa Abenchucha's blog. According to today's entry there are 5 Factulty Resolutions proposed that need to be addressed, and you can read in details at the above link. Plus no one can not read Ricky's blog, it's addictive! There is also the official website of FSSA

Here are additional Thoughts and Links 4 FSSA movement!

This is a good piece from the NY Times

You can buy "12 Days in May" products at Cafe Press/Deaf Weekly I may order one of the tees, but I already brought one of the original tees during the protest "Unity for Galladedet" from FSSA rep Ryan DiGiovanni, you can can contact him directly at tshirts@gallyfssa.org to order a tee or Tent City post cards. Please folks, continue to support FSSA efforts in anyway you can!

I loved the fact that MSD *MD School for the Deaf* where I used to work, set up a MSD students' blog about their support. I met the SBG president Zach Enis of MSD during my visits at Tent City, he's a nice kid, wants to go into Politics.

Here's one blogger who compared the FSSA movement to that of Harvard University under DeafDc.com

Here's an excerpt from Bobby Cox at deafdc.com;

No Confidence
Posted by Bobby Cox on Tue 9 May 2006

"Yesterday, 145 out of 220 Gallaudet faculty voted on five resolutions concerning Dr. Jane K. Fernandes’s selection. They essentially laid out the gauntlet for Jane Fernandes: the faculty do not support her selection as President and want the search process reopened.

(FAILED 96-49) Accept the BoT decision & work with Dr. Fernandes.
(PASSED 77-68) Ask Dr. Fernandes to renounce her appointment as President.
(PASSED 85-58) Reopen the search process.
(PASSED 93-47) Express no confidence in Jane Fernandes.
(PASSED 80-57) Express no confidence in the Board of Trustees decision to appoint Jane Fernandes. "

Wow if these numbers don't mean anything, what does??

This Tent City link is so cool, you can click on the "Inhabitats" and see photos of the protestors, Thank you Julie :) Julie Guberman's work

For good video clips go to Bison TV or review Mark Cole's footage Digizure Studio

For cartoons, check these deaf centered artists at Sign Up Comics, you can join their mailing list.

Ohmigod, what is up with IKJ and JKF "My Space" crap!?!

Tent City Photo Saga continues....

Here are the photos from the Rally Friday night b4 the news of the JKF resignation of Provost...

This is one of the younger FSSA supporters;

Here's Cole filming the rally with his sidekick Pibbs!

This is Michy, she was this nice girl who introduced herself the night before at the house party.

Here is the Mayor, Chris of Tent City with Sean Moor and LaToya Plummer nearby;

Here's Ryan Commerson speaking at the Rally after his PNG ban was ended;

Here's one of the FSSA reps who name I wasn't able to get;

Here's another FSSA supporter or rep who's name I didn't catch but he spoke about how people fought against Slavery and this was just another example of oppression and to "break free of the chains" kinda deal;

Here's Tawney Holmes one of the key supporters of FSSA, if she wasn't around Tent City she was busily typing away on the computer working on press releases and letters;

Here was a Russian supporter, name unknow;

Here's Ridor and Stacey (She's a factulty member of RIT/NTID who came down to show her support, nice lady)

At the end of every rally the Mayor, Chris would lead a pep shout of "Unity for Gallaudet!"

Tonight after work is done, I will finally finish uploading the photos from when JKF/BOTs announcement from Friday night.

Since Friday I have had some time to reflect and discuss the FSSA movement. It was interesting for me to see several Deaf NYers said the same thing at different times, they all said the FSSA served as a wake up call to the Deaf Community. We have been very apathetic the past 15 years, and its good to see activism alive and well again. If anything lets hope this sparks a continual trend among all the states in all areas of deaf issues of concerns (education, equal access, etc etc)... Many folks wonder if the protest will continue next fall?

Joe Joy and I were able to talk at length late Saturday nite. He suspects the reason why they choose Fernades is because of all the budget cuts the Deaf community is dealing with for example, NYTD (NY Theatre of the Deaf) lost a lot of funding, perhaps Gally higher ups heard they too may face major budget cuts. JKF has excellent fund raising skills but its the leadership skills that concerns so many of us. I don't know whether it was right of the BOT to pick someone just for the sake of $$ issues? I know Gallaudet needs all the support they can get but at what cost?

I am still disgusted with the imposed compromise by the BOT about JKF resigning as Provost. I mean FSSA really didn't have any say in the matter and if we don't accept this "offer" we look bad in the eyes of the mainstream society. It looks like we are ingrates but how can they expect us to be grateful for this? This isn't what we asked for. We asked for the flaw presidential search committee to re start the process with the understanding of working with FSSA in this search. Instead they had JKF resign provost and then on top of that, to add insult to the injury, she will lead the national search for the new provost! Come on, no one trusts her, why should we trust her to find the right Provost? She had 6 years at Gally, and 5 or 6 years at MSSD to prove herself and she failed to do so repeatedly as a leader. But as a fundraiser, she is excellent. So why don't they have her working in the budget department? Instead of Prez which requires skills other than fundraising such as leadership and the ability to schmooze with the right people (both deaf and hearing)?!

On to other things
My co worker's husband was unable to find anything in Brooklyn so I am on my own. I've emailed 10 different apts today and a few rooms for rent. I may just cave in and have roommates again. I don't have a choice to be honest. I am leery of roommates but I would save myself a lot of money if I had roommates. Plus the aggravation of applying for a lease and not having a large income. Perhaps one more year with roommates? Or do I float around with friends for one month and then maybe roommate with a deaf friend?? I will see how the next few weeks go...

Alrighty back to work and apt hunting and will finish posting photos tonight, PROMISE!
