Finally someone can explain clearly the travesty she inflicted on MSSD shortly after I graduated .
The Letter from Wayne Shook: Wayne Shook was the President of Parents Advisory Council at Model Secondary School for the Deaf in 1995, he has something to say about Jane Fernandes:
"I probably would have formed the same opinion that the general public made after reading the article in the Washington Post that the students protested Dr. Fernandes’ appointment as the next President of Gallaudet University because of her not saying “Hi” to the students. Since I have some firsthand knowledge and personal experience of interaction with Dr. Fernandes in the past, I know that the lack of saying “Hi’ is not the issue but a distortion to shift the attention away from her poor record of management as well as being the “Yes” person to the current Gallaudet President.
Back in, I believe it was 1995, when I was President of Parents Advisory Committee (PAC) of Model Secondary School for the Deaf, and Dr. Fernandes was newly appointed as head of Pre-College Departments which include Pre-School programs, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and Model Secondary School of the Deaf MSSD). Shortly after Dr. Fernandes’ appointment, the PAC held one of its regular meetings which Dr. Fernandes attended. One of the issues that the PAC was concerned with was the issue of MSSD’s budget being part of the Gallaudet College’s budget. The PAC wanted the allocated funds for MSSD to be controlled by the MSSD personnel. Dr. Fernandes explained that the Galladuet College President (Dr. Jordan) has the control and final say in the allocation of the Gallaudet College funds. I repeatedly asked her questions in various ways if she would speak up for us (PAC) regarding our concerns and disagreements on how part of MSSD funds are reallocated to other Departments within the Gallaudet College such as Research Department. The PAC understood that Gallaudet Research Department does some research work on behalf of MSSD but we wanted a say in what areas of research as well as priorities of the research projects. Dr. Fernandes consistently answered that Dr. Jordan is a fair person and would make sure that MSSD gets its fair share. Dr. Fernandes refused to say that she’d speak up for us and would not give us a name of other person of influence that can speak up for us as Dr. Fernandes insisited that she is the only person of influence on behalf of MSSD. The PAC was frustrated with her as she made the impression that she is a “Yes” person and would not disagree with Dr. Jordan on our behalf.
This continued to be her trait all along the years she has worked at Gallaudet. Dr. Jordan rewarded her by appointing her in various positions in his administration thus built up her resume which you then pointed out to be the most qualified one among the final candidates. I do want to bring up one other issue that the protesters are concerned about is the omission of other candidates who have more qualifications than two other finalists. One candidate with such qualifications did not rate an interview which we want to know why - one possible reason is that this candidate had disagreed with Dr. Jordan’s policy in the past thus was this candidate blackballed?
There are so many issues that came up during Dr. Fernandes’ 11 years tenure at Gallaudet University. Dr. Fernandes’ 11 years tenure was possible due only to Dr. Jordan - not Dr. Fernandes’ qualities.
Don’t you think that the message of “No Confidence” from the students, Faculty, Graduate Studies Department and Gallaudet Alumni made it clear that Dr. Fernandes is not the right person to take over as the next President of our beloved Gallaudet University?"
